{"id":11643,"date":"2018-10-05T14:27:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T14:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/?p=11643"},"modified":"2018-10-05T14:31:27","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T14:31:27","slug":"nymph-cc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/nymph-cc\/","title":{"rendered":"Nymph CC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Readers,<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer I was fortunate to visit the stimulating city of Buenos Aires.\u00a0 I had heard of its architectural grandeur and stylish inhabitants, but I had not anticipated the high quality of art, all around, especially in the public museums.\u00a0 The permanent collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, for instance, contains paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, El Greco and a large number of significant Argentinian artists.\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t believe it when I turned a corner and saw Edouard Manet\u2019s <em>Surprised Nymph <\/em>(1861) \u2013 it was like bumping into a dear, old friend \u2013 for I\u2019d once spent days standing in front of her, studying her twisting, undressed form when the painting was on loan in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Here, Manet, always the rebel, breaks with tradition and suggests to his viewers that the intrusion upon this Bather\u2019s privacy is undesired and somewhat inappropriate.\u00a0 She does not appear to dwell in the tantalizing myths of the ancient Greeks.\u00a0 Rather, with her contemporary clothing cast aside, her double strand of pearls, and arresting gaze, she manifests a sense of bold modernity.\u00a0 Unlike her mythological counterparts, this woman is imbued with self-possession and individuality. \u00a0An unusual way to depict a naked nymph. \u00a0It was a joy to glimpse this art work again.
