{"id":11661,"date":"2018-11-22T18:25:58","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T18:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/?p=11661"},"modified":"2021-01-05T17:43:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T17:43:24","slug":"adrian-pipper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/adrian-pipper\/","title":{"rendered":"Adrian Pipper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Readers,<\/p>\n<p>This Fall, there is a remarkable art exhibition at Los Angeles&#8217; Hammer Museum entitled \u00abAdrian Piper: Concepts and Intuitions, 1965-2016.\u00bb&nbsp; I have studied Piper&#8217;s work for decades, and I greatly appreciate the way this retrospective show captures her deep sense of commitment, humor, and intellectual rigor.&nbsp; Piper is a true multi-media artist (working in performance, installation, video, photography, drawing, etc.), has a doctorate in philosophy, and has practiced yoga since the mid-1960s. &nbsp;All of these factors come together in her poignant artistic efforts to improve the world.<\/p>\n<p>One of Piper&#8217;s most powerful techniques is to make viewers aware of their habitual xenophobic thought-processes. &nbsp;She demonstrates the urgent need for all of us to behave consciously and stop automatically reacting negatively towards the new or unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>This may be seen, for instance, in a small room that displays <em>Safe #1-4 <\/em>(1990).&nbsp; It contains four large black-and-white photographs of joyful African and African-American gatherings, like celebratory family dinners and a group ski trip.&nbsp; Printed in red across the bottom of each photograph is one of the following phrases: \u00abWe are around you,\u00bb \u00abWe are among you,\u00bb \u00abWe are within you,\u00bb \u00abYou are Safe.\u00bb&nbsp; Well aware of the overwhelming amount of negative\/racist depictions of Black people in mass media, Piper offers the opposite.&nbsp; The opposite is compelling. &nbsp;It forces viewers to question the constant proliferation of detrimental images regarding Black communities. &nbsp;When one pauses to actively cross-examine the validity of such racist representations, then one can begin to think in a conscious, less reactive, and more peaceful manner towards everyone. &nbsp;And that is a pretty good step towards making the world a better place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Readers, This Fall, there is a remarkable art exhibition at Los Angeles&#8217; Hammer Museum entitled \u00abAdrian Piper: Concepts and Intuitions, 1965-2016.\u00bb&nbsp; I have studied Piper&#8217;s work for decades, and I greatly appreciate the way this retrospective show captures her [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[138,133],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-11661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cultural-corner","category-eng"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11661","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=11661"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11661\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":11975,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11661\/revisions\/11975"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=11661"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=11661"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/myaorg.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=11661"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
