Detachment

Emotional Healing Series – Detachment

Our journey on this planet is a journey into matter. We came here to enjoy matter through our perception system, and in that journey we get lost, because it is extremely easy to get lost in attachment. We perceive the beauty of the sky at night and we get lost in attachment. We perceive the beauty of a human body and we get lost in attachment. All our sensorial experiences conducts us toward this central problem in our life, attachment.

The problem is that attachment is inextricably embedded in our emotions to the point of having the power to govern our mind and hence our life. The sacred book “The Upanishads” states in the Chandukya Upanishad that “we are what our deep driven desire is, as our desire is so is our will, as our will is, so is our deed, and as our deed is, so is our destiny”. In our journey into matter desire plays a key role as we all have very rooted desires to explore matter in all its different Forms and Qualities.

There is nothing wrong about desire until we get attach. Then the suffering begins, as we fear our object of attachment may not be attained. If we could follow and understand how our simple mental mechanisms work, then it would also be simple for us to better our thoughts, which would greatly work in our favor. These mechanisms won’t stop, thoughts don’t stop, but they can be driven towards beauty instead to ugliness.   Like everything in life, it’s up to us to create such transformations.  Awareness is crucial in this process.

And this is what meditation is about, the process of becoming more aware, to refine our self towards awareness. In his book “Don Juan”, Carlos Castaneda refers to this concept as the depredatory way the universe is pushing us towards awareness. The universe, according to the Shamans, wants us to be more and more aware.

So in order to work on detachment we first need to understand what our ties are. What we are attached to.

This is the beginning of the process, to be able to recognize our ties and let them go. Then, detachment kicks in and life becomes much more interesting, because through the process of understanding detachment, we can also begin the process of manifesting a life of purpose. Detachment is the key to manifesting our desires. When we understand that we don’t handle the outcomes, our intentions and desires can be manifested if we prepare the terrain to plant those seeds. Meditation is the fresh water for that preparation, our heart the fertile soil and our intentions and desires the seeds that we plant.

Johan Wolfgang von Goethe wrote:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back… The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sort of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now”.
